Doing Engineering : What to do in the tough Economy?

This is the question every engineering college student is asking “What to do in the tough Economy?”. So i decided to share my point of view in that.

As far as I can think, i did my engineering in 2004 and seriously speaking we do not have any expectation that we will get a job with so high package. At that time the call center boom was just started and people are getting around 15-20k in call centers and many students who wants to make good money were going  for call center Job.

That time this much amount is too big for anybody and we as an engineer are thinking that an Job with 10-12k salary would be the good job. But in present time the expectation are completely different, now everybody (parents, media and engineer himself) thinks once A person get the paper of degree than they might be getting big salaries.

This scenario was created by the Indian people who are running the Outsourced industry. In India there is crunch of talented people, we are having people with degrees but not the skills. Industry was going so high that it needs people at any cost. They increase the packages to get people from small industry so that they did not have to spend money on the training and there is also pressure to meet the deadline of project and for that the people with some skills need to work much beyond the office timings. To make people work beyond the normal working hours, industry need to give higher packages. For me it was like that industry is paying a single person the salary of 2 people.

There are lots of other things like Industry only focused on the outsourcing not on the development. They did not realize that india itself is such a big market why not to do something for India. There is one other point why not to develop technology and product and sell to the other countries not just to do the outsourced work. Our policy maker does not realize that the country like India can not survive without farming because we can earn more money by doing IT but ultimately we need food to eat. If we less concentrate on farming the cost of living increase and it would effect the complete system. Everybody was running in the race of this Virtual Money Generation Process. The demands of services  are increasing and so as the prices :) because some people have the paying capacity. Our forefather told us long time back and that is so relevant even in todays time जितनी चादर हो उतने ही पैर पसारो.” i.e. spend as much money as you have today. But the system make us to dream for the big salary and spend as much as we will be earning after 20 years.

Above I tried to explain the situation and how we have trapped in this. But the biggest question in today time is how to survive in this type of economy specially for those people who have big dreams and in the midle of their Enginering degree.

Read these points :
1. Do not have big expectations from Industry, like higher packages in the early stage of employment.

2. Try to go for Higher education specially in technical fields. This is what we are lacking. Whats better than to go for education getting some scholarship and bypass the time of bad economy :) .

3. Join startups specially those which are focusing more on India specific products. In startups we can get more opportunities to learn and specially if they are india specific than we will realize the potential of Indian market and will contribute in the growth of India.

4. Do not panic, try to enhance the skill set so that industries are able to realize your worth. This is not the time when Industry will be  only focusing on the outsourced work where no skills are required. But now future is to Innovate,  to develop and to create otherwise will get finish.

So guys it is the time to rethink about your expectations and also it is the time to learn. Life also gives a chance to improve and presently it is the chance of India to rethink what we have done in last 4 years. Fortunately we are in this situation in the early stage, if it would happened after 2-3 years sitation might be more worse.

Engineering does not just mean that read some books and get degree, Enginnering is to have the enough technical skills and also have the managarial capability to use those technical skills in the development of some product/services.
